Rooms 5 & 6

In rooms 5 & 6, children have 2 structured activities per day, with the remaining time spent with free play. Learning from play is evident throughout. Children are using their imagination, curiosity and inquisitive minds to make their way around the room which has been sectioned into different areas such as ICT, construction, creative play, home corner, sand, water, reading, mark making, maths and play dough, all of which will help prepare them for the transition into school.

Children are much more sociable at this age. They will happily share with their friends and are able to solve problems. Staff observe the children through play and are readily on hand to join in when a task gets a little tricky.

Now they are a little older and their concentration levels are higher, children are able to partake in more lengthy activities such as cooking in the kitchen and listening to longer stories. We also take day trips Bootle library and invite more visitors into the nursery. Children are able to follow instruction and listen to others to help them use various equipment and materials which are unsuitable for younger children.

Children do feed themselves unaided and bibs are not worn in rooms 5 & 6. They are toileted in small groups and are able to go to the toilet on their own. Staff are there to help wipe bottoms (if they feel that the child needs help) and teach children basic hygiene like washing their hands and brushing their teeth which are all part of their daily routine.

Sleep time does not really exist in these rooms, however, staff are sensitive to individual children’s needs and quiet time is provided after lunch when children will watch television for half an hour. Those who still need a nap or are feeling a little snoozy can take themselves into the reading area and relax on the cushions.

The children help plan the menu on a Friday with the cook. They are asked what they would like to eat and offered a variety of food for the following weeks Friday meal. They sometimes choose convenience food but we are trying to introduce a healthier balanced diet that they choose. They are also involved in cooking some of the food in the kitchen.

Our fire escape is used in case of emergencies in this room and children practice walking up and down it in an orderly manner when we have fire drills.
