Room 4The terrible two’s are setting in. Your child’s personality is much more prevalent by the time they get to this room. The room has been arranged with the assistance of Early Years specifically for the 2 – 2½ year age range with a home corner, library, reading and water/sand area. All the areas prepare your child for the transition upstairs where all the foundation stage areas are clearly set out. Children are fully able to sit and feed themselves at meal times. Bibs are used, but resistance to wearing them starts within this age group. Key worker’s are there to encourage (by joining in at meal time) and assist when help is needed. Sleep time is reduced to a maximum of one hour unless instructed by parents and will reduce further to get them ready for the transition to the next room where sleep is rare. Again, sleeping on individual mattresses with their own bedding occurs in this room and the use of dummies is usually for sleep time only. Potty training is more prevalent in this room. Around age 2, we start toilet training, however, again, we work with you. If you do not want your child to start now, please inform staff. For children to succeed in potty training, they need to be able to communicate. Therefore, it is important for you to talk to staff about your child, as if they do not communicate in nursery as much as they do at home, they may not have much success. If your child does a certain thing to tell you that they need to go to the toilet, please tell us. Please remember, your child may have instant access to a potty at home but they will not in nursery. They will have to get to the bathroom and this takes a little longer. This may result in one or two more accidents. Don’t panic, they’ll get there in the end. Children are taken in small groups to the toilet at regular intervals. The potties are out for those who are being potty trained and children are encouraged to sit on the potties with the help of key worker’s, even if they do not manage to do anything. Familiarity is half the battle. For those who are still in nappies, they become accustomed to seeing their friends use the potty and are therefore more eager to try themselves. Star charts and positive reinforcement will be used to encourage your child to use the toilet or potty. Children are beginning to talk in short sentences. Children are able to listen to short stories as their attention span develops. Action nursery rhymes are sung throughout the day as children develop their hand-eye coordination. They are able to link words together and associate colours with familiar objects. Room 1 | Room 2 | Room 3 | Room 4 | Rooms 5 & 6 |
